Decorated with pictures and ink each telling their own individual tales, some faded from many long days spent in the sun, and the smell of smoke from a cigarette just finished and one recently lit, lived both a French bar and its landlady.
In France- in the smaller villages anyway- instead of pubs there are bars which consist of a landlady (or sometimes a lord) at her bar, a few scattered bar tables and chairs and occasionally scratch cards and magazines for sale. If someone pops in for their daily drink, before ordering it seems custom to go to each person already in the bar and shake their hand or give them two kisses. It made me laugh to think of what would happen if this custom was tried in England, unfortunately somehow I think the response would be slightly different.
